Biochemistry

Department of Biochemistry

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry! We are dedicated to exploring the chemistry of life, delving into the intricate molecular processes that govern all living organisms. Biochemistry bridges the fields of biology and chemistry, providing a fundamental understanding of how life functions at the molecular and cellular level.

Biochemistry investigates the structure, function, and interactions of the key molecules of life, including:

  • Proteins: The workhorses of the cell, performing a vast array of functions from catalyzing reactions to structural support.

  • Nucleic Acids (DNA & RNA): The carriers of genetic information and the blueprints for protein synthesis.

  • Carbohydrates: Essential for energy storage, cellular recognition, and structural integrity.

  • Lipids: Vital components of cell membranes, energy storage, and signalling molecules.

Our research areas often include:

  • Enzymology: Studying the mechanisms and regulation of enzyme activity.

  • Metabolism: Understanding how organisms obtain and use energy.

  • Molecular Genetics and Gene Expression: Investigating how genetic information is stored, replicated, and used.

  • Signal Transduction: Exploring how cells communicate with each other.

  • Structural Biology: Determining the 3D structures of biomolecules to understand their function.

  • Molecular Medicine and Drug Discovery: Applying biochemical principles to develop new therapies.

  • Computational Biology & Bioinformatics: Using computational tools to analyze biological data.
