Welcome to the Department of Hausa Language! We are your vibrant center for exploring Hausa, a major West African language and a cornerstone of rich cultural heritage. Our department is dedicated to fostering fluency, promoting in-depth understanding of Hausa literature and linguistics, and celebrating the enduring cultural significance of the Hausa people and their language.
The Department of Hausa is formed after restructuring of the defunct department of Nigerian Languages, resulting in its division into three departments. The Department of Hausa is one of the newly formed departments and as a consequence, B.A. Hausa is now housed under it.
Our programs offer a comprehensive immersion into the Hausa language and its multifaceted cultural context:
Hausa Language Proficiency: Developing strong skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, including exposure to Standard Hausa and various dialects.
Hausa Literature: Exploring classical and contemporary Hausa poetry, prose, drama, and oral traditions.
Hausa Linguistics: Analyzing the phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of the Hausa language, recognizing its unique tonal nature.
Hausa Culture and Society: Examining the history, traditions, social structures, and contemporary issues of the Hausa people.
Hausa Media and Communication: Engaging with Hausa media, journalism, and the role of language in modern communication.
Translation and Interpretation: Building skills in translating between Hausa and other major languages.
Our program is designed to build robust language skills and a deep cultural understanding. Our curriculum emphasizes communicative competence, critical literary analysis, and linguistic research. Students benefit from a supportive learning environment, often with opportunities for engagement with Hausa-speaking communities and cultural events.
