Prof. Mustapha Ahmad Isa, the new Vice-Chancellor, Northwest University, Kano, is a Professor of English Language and Linguistics. Before his new appointment, he was the Director of Academic Planning at Bayero University Kano, former Director of the Management Information Systems Unit (MIS) and member of the Bayero University Governing Council.
He was born 50 years ago, in May 1965, at No. 26 Yola Quarters, in Kano City. He obtained an Islamiyya School Certificate from Yolawa Union School, a Primary School Certificate from Shahuci Primary School in 1977, and a Grade II Teachers’ Certificate, from the School for Arabic Studies (SAS) in 1982. He had a B.A. Hausa (Language) degree from Bayero University Kano in 1987, missing a First Class by a fraction of a percentage. He later obtained an M.A. in 1990 and a PhD in 1994, from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, with a Major in Theoretical Linguistics, and a Minor in Applied English Linguistics.
Prof. Mustapha Isa has been with the Department of English and Literary Studies, Bayero University Kano, since 1994, where he has taught virtually all the courses in the language section – undergraduate, PG Diploma, Masters and PhD. He has co-authored nine books and published 32 articles in university-based journals and chapters in books. Some of his works were published in the USA, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom.
Prof. Isa has supervised numerous B.A. projects, Masters theses, and PhD dissertations in various areas of English Language and Linguistics. For 15 years, he has served as an External Examiner in five Federal and four State Universities in Nigeria. During this time, he has examined over 50 Master’s and 17 PhD candidates, mainly in the areas of Morphosyntax, Word Formation, Semantics, Pragmatics, Media English, Critical Discourse Analysis, Applied Linguistics, and the Teaching of English as a Second Language. In addition to teaching and research, Prof. Isa has also had numerous other responsibilities at the departmental, faculty and university levels, in addition to extensive editorial experience. He is a former Editor-in-Chief, Bayero Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies; and former Chairman, Bayero University Annual Report Committee.
Prof. Mustapha Ahmad has offered consultancy services to numerous institutions and corporate organisations in Nigeria and abroad, and is a member of many professional associations in Nigeria and West Africa. A veteran basketball player, Mustapha has visited over 20 countries around the world. He is married and has seven children.
