His Excellency, Governor Eng. (Dr.) Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, the Executive Governor of Kano State founded the university in March 2012. He was born at Kwankwaso town in Madobi local government area of Kano State on october, 21st, 1956. He was enrolled for his modern education in Kwankwaso Primary School in 1962, until 1969. Thereafter, he was admitted to wudil craft school in 1970-72, and later at the Kano Technical School in 1972-75. Soon after graduation from Kaduna Polytechnic in 1975, he went on to Middlesex Polytechnic in 1982, then to Loughborough University of Technology in 1983-85, and later Nottingham University in 1987-1991. Governor Kwankwaso has received professional and distinguished certifications from Derby National Water Council in 1982, Derby Water Industrial Training School in 1985, and London Industrial Training at the same year. He was awarded an honourary Doctor of Science and International Relations of the Crescent University, Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 2012 and university of Sharda, Delhi India in 2014 in recognition of his exemplary contributions to public service and administration.
Governor Kwankwaso began his professional career in the position of Artisan Technician with the Kano State Government, and yet within a mere 17 years rose to the rank of Principal Engineer with Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Agency (WRECA). By the time he left the Agency to begin a political career in 1991, he had the reputation of a resourceful and highly motivated public servant dedicated to the professional and technical development of WRECA.
As a testament to his personal integrity and incentive mind, he was elected member of the federal house of representatives in 1992 and elected deputy speaker, Federal House of Representatives in the same year. In 1999, Governor Kwankwaso was elected with overwhelming vote numbers as the Governor of Kano State, a position he held for four eventful years with extraordinary distinction. Soon after serving a term as Governor, He was appointed the Minister of Defence until 2006, after which he served as the special adviser to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the conflicts in Darfur and Somalia between 2009 to 2010. He was appointed as representative of North-west zone in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Testifying to his sterling qualities and exemplary leadership, he was again re-elected executive Governor of Kano state by his people in 2011 for another term of four years.
